Hypertension (high blood pressure) is a chronic condition in which the force of blood pushing against your artery walls is consistently too high.
It forces the heart to work harder to pump blood. Untreated, it significantly increases the risk of serious health problems, including heart attack, stroke, and kidney disease.
Diagnosis and Categories
Blood pressure is measured in millimeters of mercury (mm Hg) and is recorded using two numbers: systolic (pressure when the heart beats) and diastolic (pressure when the heart rests).
Normal: Below 120/80 mm Hg.
Elevated: Systolic 120–129 and diastolic below 80.
Stage 1 Hypertension: Systolic 130–139 or diastolic 80–89.
Stage 2 Hypertension: Systolic 140 or higher or diastolic 90 or higher.
Hypertensive Crisis: Higher than 180/120 mm Hg. Seek immediate emergency medical attention if readings are this high, especially if accompanied by symptoms like chest pain, shortness of breath, or vision changes.
Symptoms Often called the "silent killer," hypertension typically has no noticeable signs or symptoms. The only way to know your blood pressure is to have it measured regularly.
Ayurvedic hypertension management combines personalized dietary shifts, stress-relieving yoga, and specific herbal formulations to balance the body's energies (Doshas). It emphasizes treating the root cause through natural detoxification and lifestyle discipline rather than just suppressing symptoms.
The holistic approach focuses on three core pillars:
1. Herbal Remedies
Sarpagandha
Ashwagandha
Brahmi:
Arjuna:
2. Diet (Aahara)
What to include:
Cooling, potassium-rich foods like bananas, spinach, coconut water, bottle gourd, and pomegranate.
What to avoid:
Excessive sodium, refined white sugar, caffeine, alcohol, and heavily fried or spicy meals.
3. Lifestyle & Yoga (Vihara)
Mental stress is a primary trigger for blood pressure fluctuations.
Ayurveda recommends daily practices to calm the nervous system:
Pranayama: Breathing techniques like Anulom-Vilom are proven to regulate stress and blood pressure.
Yoga poses: Gentle asanas like Shavasana and Sukhasana induce deep physical relaxation.
Dinacharya: Maintaining a disciplined daily routine, timely sleep and oil massages.
